Dear Patriots,

I received some information yesterday that I want to share with all of you because a) I think it is something everyone should know, since not knowing could be hazardous to our health; and b) I would really appreciate hearing what you think of it.

For privacy reasons, I can't tell you who told me this or what his/her affiliations might be, so I just have to ask you to trust me that this person is telling me the truth. The news itself is simple and straightforward. It's the possible repercussions that are bothering me.

This person, who is here in the continental United States, was recently innoculated for smallpox. A number of you and I have talked about the news that has been circulating regarding the possible threats of a smallpox bio-attack, about the gov't. ordering and stockpiling vaccine, and about some physicians' and scientists' grave reservations about the safety of this vaccine and whether mass innoculations are warranted and/or worth the serious risk. We have also talked about plans in the works for devising strategies for mass quarantining, possibly against our wills and about the possibility of our government forcing us to take the vaccine, and let our children be vaccinated, whether we want to or not.

I think all of us agree there are ominous overtones to all of this. I think all of us, more or less, are concerned about these issues. But, when I received this news from this person and realized that, if he/she was given the vaccine, a rather large number of other people have been also, the first thing I thought of was a detail I'd read:

The smallpox vaccination site features a pus-filled sore that contains the live virus. Some people develop a mild case of smallpox from taking the shot. If an unvaccinated person comes into contact with that sore, he/she can get full-blown smallpox. I am just old enough to remember children around me getting their smallpox shots. I never got one because, when I was 2, I got a flu shot that triggered an abundance of allergies, most of which I've long since outgrown. My parents are both dead, so I have no way to verify any of this, but somehow my pediatrician determined that the flu shot reaction made my getting the smallpox vaccine far too dangerous to risk. The disease was on the road to eradication at the time-- there were no cases in the U.S.-- so my parents made the decision to not have me innoculated. I never was. I remember very well being warned about touching the sore of a friend, as that would have the same effect on me as getting the shot myself. Back then you got the shot before the first of August in the summer before you entered first grade. The sore is contagious for 2 to 4 weeks, so this rule helped ensure little kids in classrooms and on playgrounds wouldn't be infecting each other. My sister and I shared a bedroom, and when she got her shot, my parents moved my brother in with her and me into the bedroom he had to himself-- and I clearly remember my mother being practically hysterical about my touching Lynda's arm, or even her clothes or bedding. I had a brother and a sister who died in infancy, and my mother did NOT deal well with threats to her surviving children. She watched me 24/7, I think, and I remember her making us wear long sleeves which, in Memphis in July, was torture!

Anyway, hearing this news brought back alot of those childhood memories and I realized, we have possibly hundreds of thousands of Americans in this country right now walking around with those dangerous pus-ey sores on their arms and virtually no one knows it! Search this disease if you want to know how horrible, painful, deadly, and contagious it is if you don't already know. Check out the history of it-- how it is, for example, believed to be the cause of the disappearance of the Aztecs-- the part is has played in the devestation of civilizations, ethnic groups (Native Americans), empires (Far & Middle East), monarchies (Europe), etc. throughout its history.

This is NOT something that should have been brought back into our country without our knowing about it! Not only may we be in contact with people who have the sore, our children might be. I'm pretty upset that they have done this and kept it from us-- once again, because of their secrecy, some of our lives might be in danger, just like anyone who flew commercially after the first of July last year. Interesting timing... could this be "here we go again?"

I just keep thinking how not one infinitesimal sub-atomic particle of this virus has been in existence in America for decades, and now a rather large number of arms out there have enough, each one, to start an epidemic that would kill many of us. When I heard this, I realized, maybe, why they have been gearing up these quarantine programs. Between the government itself screwing this up somehow and/or people being careless or forgetting or not taking the threat of contagion seriously or whatever, I wonder what the chances are that this little clandestine vaccination program they are engaged in will end up mushrooming into a full-blown disaster.

I've not done anything yet. I want to hear from you before I do anything. Not that I have any idea what, if anything, to do! The fact is, of course, it is summer and most American cities are hot, and most people who are out and about are wearing short/no sleeves. Maybe it'd just be smart to avoid big crowds for awhile, by that I mean really big, where touching up against other people would be unavoidable. Maybe we should write the media (yeah, like they ever answer anyway...)-- or Congress... maybe start plastering info all over the aol boards and anywhere else we can on the Internet. I really wonder how many people, besides the ones who've gotten the shot, know about this? Surely the person I heard it from isn't the only one leaking the news...

Pardon the pun, but I am dying to hear from you all!! I wanted you to know so you and your families could be safe. Also, maybe some of you know medical people who might have some light to shed on this. Okay, I'll shut up now. I'm sorry-- I didn't mean to go on this long. But I suppose I'm even more apprehensive about this than I thought when I first started this note to you.
